Justice White gave the opinon of the court. In 1985, by a 6-3 margin, the supreme court ruled that New Jersey and the school were reasonable for conducting such searches at school. The court stated that warrants were not needed nor a probably cause in conducting a search, because students have a ‘reduced expectation of privacy when in school’.
T.L.O’s case has had an effect on present day society. Due to all of the breakout of school violence such as school shootings due to the lack of searching of suspicious persons. But, the Supreme Court decided that every individual has a right to privacy, and even in schools and workplaces where people have been hurt by this law still have their right to not have their belongings searched.
